S’il est nécessaire qu’un appareil de protection respiratoire soit adapté à la fois au polluant et à la situation de travail afin de fournir le niveau de protection attendu, il est également primordial qu’il soit adapté à l’utilisateur. Les performances de deux masques complets, disponibles en différentes tailles, ont été évaluées en fonction de leur ajustement au visage et du rythme respiratoire du porteur à l’aide d’une tête factice connectée à une machine simulant une respiration sinusoïdale. L’importance du choix de l’appareil de protection respiratoire (modèle et taille) en fonction des dimensions du visage, notamment pour des activités intenses induisant un rythme respiratoire élevé, a ainsi été mise en évidence.

If a respiratory protective device needs to be adapted to both the pollutant and the working situation in order to provide the expected level of protection, its adaptation to the user is also essential. The efficiency of two full-facepiece respirators, available in several sizes, was evaluated varying the fit factor and the breathing rate using a respirator testing headform connected to a digital breathing machine simulating a sinusoidal respiration. The choice of the respiratory protective device (model and size) according to the face dimensions was evidenced to be of great importance, especially for intense activities inducing a high breathing rate.
